The Fixes - Free Classroom Resources
It includes easy-to-launch classroom transitions, indoor recess activities and movement breaks, all usable from a teacher’s browser without student accounts or devices. Student-facing screens are ad-free.
Calgary Behavioural & Experimental Economics Laboratory (CBEEL) at UCalgary - Looking for research participants
CBEEL runs paid research studies on decision-making throughout the semester. Joining the participant pool doesn’t commit students to participating in any study. It simply means they’ll receive information about upcoming studies and can choose whether to take part.
Students can register at cbeel.lab.run.
We’re also running a separate guessing game for participant-pool members, with a $100 bookstore gift card for the winner. Students choose a number between 1 and 1,000, and the guess closest to two-thirds of the average wins. Entries close October 31, 2026. The postcard includes the details and QR codes for registration and submitting a guess.

Economics of Disasters Teacher Workshop - Fraser Insitute
This opportunity may be of interest for Werklund pre-service teachers interested in teaching social studies, business, or economics in grades 9–12. We’re hosting an Economics of Disasters teacher workshop in Calgary at the end of this month, in partnership with the Foundation for Teaching Economics, and typically reserve some spaces for teacher candidates.
The workshop uses interactive activities and real-world examples to explore how economic concepts help explain responses to disasters. Participants receive classroom-ready lesson plans and teaching materials, opportunities to meet economics professors, and time to connect with fellow educators.
Most attendees will be practising teachers from Calgary and across Alberta, making this a great opportunity for pre-service teachers to experience professional development and meet potential future colleagues.
Attendance is completely free. We offer teacher candidates a participation stipend in place of the teacher-on-call support available to practising teachers, or we’re happy to provide travel support if that would be more helpful.
Would you be willing to share this opportunity with relevant pre-service teachers, or connect me with the appropriate person to help circulate it? You’re also welcome to share it with partner teachers who might be interested.
Further details and registration are available here:

Teacher candidates should note their student status in the registration comments so we can arrange the appropriate support.
Volunteer Afterschool English Conversation Club (ECC), now running in Calgary public high schools.
The ECC builds the foundational language skills and conversational confidence students need to succeed in classroom and social settings. North American classrooms place a high value on assertive participation and critical discussion, but many education systems around the world do not share these expectations. The ECC uses small conversation circles that mimic classroom discussions, giving students a low-pressure space to practice participating in class and expressing themselves as they adapt to life in a new country. We also aim to stimulate critical discussion around common lived experiences of newcomer students, such as how their first language shapes the way they understand and use English, interpreting for their parents, and code-switching, as a way to explore identity and belonging in the diaspora.
Our program is run in partnership with the Calgary Bridge for Youth Foundation and their Settlement Workers in Schools Initiative, funded by IRCC, who are helping us identify areas of high need. This program will provide students from the Werklund School of Education with exposure to the intersectional barriers that newcomer students, a growing demographic in Calgary, are facing in public schools.

First-Generation Mentorship Program
Are you the first generation in your family to attend post-secondary education in Canada? If so, we'd love to welcome you to the First-Generation Mentorship Program.
Our program supports Indigenous, international, and immigrant students, as well as folks from across Canada. You are still considered a first-gen student even if your siblings or extended chosen family have attended college or university.
As a mentee, you'll be matched with an upper-year student in your program or faculty who can answer your questions, share their experiences, and help you navigate your first year with confidence. We have an amazing group of mentors in the Education program this year, and we’d love for you to be part of this supportive community!
How to join: Complete this Mentee Application Form to connect with a Peer Mentor.
