Kokum Calls You...

The Kokum (Grandmother in Nêhiyaw/Cree) scarf represents the longstanding relationship between Indigenous peoples and Ukrainian people who faced discrimination upon arriving in Turtle Island in 1891. Ukrainians gifted these scarves in gratitude, and today, Kokum scarves represent solidarity against oppression.

Kokum Calls You... is  a powerful and heartfelt gathering co-hosted by the Education Students' Association, the Werklund School of Education, the Faculty of Nursing, and the Faculty of Social Work. We honour respected Elders and Knowledge Keepers every year on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The event features teachings and lessons from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, opportunities for interactive dialogue, and valuable engaging experiences that include music, art, interactive displays, and showcases of Indigenous research.
