What Are Work Bees?

Our Kokum Calls You Work Bees are drop in spaces where students come together to learn, create, and prepare for September 30th. They are about much more than getting things ready for an event. Students learn about the Elders and Knowledge Keepers who will be joining us, explore their work and teachings, create displays and resources, prepare materials by hand, and learn alongside students from Education, Nursing, and Social Work.

At the heart of the Work Bees is reciprocity. Our Elders are giving us their time, stories, teachings, and knowledge, so we want to think about what it means to give back. Through what we research, create, and share, we hope to demonstrate our learning and show that we are listening and carrying these teachings forward. This reflects relational approaches to learning that centre relationships, experience, reflection, and our responsibilities to one another (Poitras Pratt & Danyluk, 2017; Poitras Pratt & Bodnaresko, 2023).

The photos you see here are from last year’s Work Bees, where students spent time making, talking, learning, and preparing together. You do not need any previous knowledge or special skills to participate. Come between classes, stay for an hour or spend the day with us.

Come for as little or as long as you can. Work bees will help us prepare displays, scarves, resources, crafts, signage, and materials for September 30.
